Dr. Menninger argues that troubled adolescent behavior can result from failure to permit adolescents the opportunity to participate in the real-life action of living. He believes adults can fail adolescents by failing to listen and failing to hear. He recommends a basic shift in adult attitudes to a more positive, accepting, and understanding postion toward youth.
